Kate presents Governor Scott with a Lunenburg Mug at the Outdoor Recreation Day at the State House! She met with the Governor, Lt. Governor, Representative John Kascenska, Senator Ingalls, Representative Wells, many folks representing the Outdoor Recreation and Adjacent Industries. Speakers included both the Governor and Lt. Governor as well as the State Treasurer and State Tourism Commissioner. Outdoor Recreation and Tourism account for a tremendous portion of Vermont’s economy and tax revenue, and we continue to look at how Lunenburg can better leverage this opportunity in our community. Opportunities exist for accommodations, businesses and services, and beyond, however most important is ensuring outdoor recreation is accessible to everyone in our community AND that our infrastructure can support it.

It’s time for the 2025 Polar Bears Toys for Tots Drive! Under the guidance of Project Hope, the club has partnered with the Lunenburg Variety Store and Gilman Senior Center.
Both locations will be accepting infant – 16yo toys, sporting goods, gloves & socks, and more during business hours. The Variety Store has a $$ donation drop box too. The Toy Drive runs until December 17th.

Project Hope works with the Kingdom East School District to ensure everything goes towards local kids in need. Thanks for helping make this Holiday season a great one!

Cathlin Lord from NVDA came to the October Planning Committee Meeting and gave an overview of Act 181 and all of the new land use categories. The meeting minutes and the recording are under Services / Agendas, Minutes & Reports / Municipal Committee.

The Polar Bears recently took delivery of a 2026 Ski Doo Skandic Super-Wide utility snowmobile. It was purchased from Dalton Mountain Motorsports in Lancaster and is equipped with a 2,500 winch, plus a powerful 900 ACE 4-stroke engine. This snowmobile will be used to groom our interior trails in Lunenburg and towards Gilman. So bring on the snow!

To help those residents experiencing problems with dry wells or lack of convenient spring water access, beginning on Tuesday, October 21 ^st , the Town will provide gallon jugs of fresh water (purchased from a local supermarket) to be made available for pick up at the Town Clerk’s office during regular business hours. Supplies are limited and we ask that only those lacking other means of safely securing water utilize this service.

Lunenburg Planning Committee will host Cathlin Lord from NVDA for a presentation on Act 181 and the new land use categories on October 23

At our October Planning Committee (October 23) Cathlin Lord from NVDA will be doing a presentation that includes an overview of Act 181 and all of the new land use categories (the overhaul of Act250 which directs Regional Planning Commissions to draft Future Land Use Plan Maps for their Regions), and the village center designation program. And then will dive into the specifics of Lunenburg's portion of NVDA’s regional FLU (Future Land Use) map.

The Lunenburg Polar Bears Have Begun Winter Prep

This week, the Polar Bears Snowmobile Club began preparing VAST trails for the upcoming winter. Our members maintain 75 miles in seven towns, stretching from Gilman to Ferdinand. Volunteers clear debris, fix bridges, repair erosion, and erect signs in the best interest of landowner preferences and the well-being of properties. Help Paint the Lunenburg Mural on June 28th

We're excited to share the design done by muralist Tara Goreau that, upon completion, will be hung on the side of the semi trailer at the Transfer Station. Tara will outline the mural on 9 Typar Sheets (each 9' tall). The sheets will be at the Hello Summer event on June 28th at Fox Field and we're hoping to have 30+ volunteers stop by and paint for anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours. This is a true community effort!

DONATION ITEMS NEEDED

The Town is hosting 2 volunteer projects in May and June and we’re in need of items.

For the Riverside Cemetery Stone Cleaning and Restoration Day on Saturday, May 31 ^st ,

8am – noon, we need:

· Volunteers: More than 40 people joined on the last stone cleaning day. This is a great activity for kids and adults. In addition to stone cleaning this year, we’ll also be doing some stone straightening. We’re hoping for another great turnout this year!

· Supplies: We have all the necessary liquids for stone cleaning. If you’re planning to come (or unable to come but would like to donate), we could use the following disposable items:

o Plastic Gloves

o Toothbrushes

o Plastic Bristle Brushes (no metal bristles)

o Empty and Clean Spray Bottles

o Plastic Scrapers

o Heavy Duty Contractor Size Garbage Bags

· DONATED ITEMS CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT THE TOWN CLERK’S OFFICE

And if you’re coming and have tools, please consider bringing the following:

· Level

· Brick Hammer

· 2 or 3 lb Hand Maul

· Pruning Sheers

· Tamper

· Pry Bar

· Battery Operated Sawsall

· Plumb Line

· Small Wooden Stakes

· 4 x 4 Wood blocks in sizes from 6” to 2’ (used for tamping)

· Wheelbarrow

For the mural painting that will take place during the Hello Summer event at Fox Field (Gilman Ball Field) on June 28 ^th , 10am – 2pm, we need:

· Clean empty individual size yogurt (or similar) containers. We’re hoping to have at least 150 available for mural painters. These can be dropped off at the Town Clerk’s Office during regular business hours until June 26 ^th .

· Painters: We need 30+ volunteers to help paint a 9’ tall by 48’ long mural that will be permanently hung on the semi-trailer at the Transfer Station. Painting is fun and easy! Our mural artist will have the design drawn on 9 different Typar banners and each area will be color coded, so you know where to paint and what color to use. Be a part of a volunteer project where you’ll be able to see your work for years to come!

This is a great position for someone who would like to have a voice and represent the 7 schools within the Kingdom East District, including Lunenburg Elementary School.

Primary legal duties are:

· Duty of Care: Take care of the District by ensuring prudent use of all assets including facility, people and good will;

· Duty of Transparency: Ensure all Board activities are transparent and foremost, advancing its mission. Make decisions that are in the best interest of the District

· Duty of Commitment: Ensure the District obeys applicable laws and regulations and adheres to its stated purpose/mission

· In partnership with the community, staff, and students, the Kingdom East School District is committed to providing a collaborative and equitable environment of educational excellence through rigorous learning experiences that develop individual and diverse talents and abilities of all our students to prepare them for successful lives as contributing, responsible citizens.

Having received no objections from a previous intent to sell posting, the Town is accepting sealed bids for town-owned property located at 2157 River Road, Lunenburg, property ID # 001047000 and being a property conveyed to Lenora Holloway by Emma M. Robbins, dated September 29, 1934, and recorded in Book 25, Page 263 of the Lunenburg Land Records. The property was purchased by the Town of Lunenburg in December 2019 as verified by the deed in Book 95, page 429 of the Lunenburg Land Records. Property is comprised of an approximate 1-acre lot and a single-family residential structure containing 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The structure was built in 1944 and is a studded frame design sitting on a stone foundation. Foundation shows severe damage. Structure has a worn gable-style metal roof. Private water and sewer system, condition of which is undetermined. Total living area is approximately 480 square feet. Minimum bid is $2,513.66, which includes $2,095.56 of property taxes owed to the Town at time of purchase and $418.00 of anticipated costs of administering the sale. Winning bidder must work with a licensed attorney of their choosing to draft Property Transfer, Deed, and any other documents necessary to complete the sale. All expenses related to this work will be borne by the winning bidder. This property is not subject to rent control ordinances as the Town has none. Current assessed value is $49,400 and annual property taxes are approximately $708.39. NOTE: The Town has reason to believe an unauthorized squatter resides in the residential structure and responsibility to remove said squatter will be the responsibility of the winning bidder. Property is sold as is. Sealed Bids should be sent to: Lunenburg Select Board, Town-Owned Property Sale, PO Box 54, Lunenburg, VT. 05906 or can be dropped off at the Town Clerk's Office at 9 West Main Street, Lunenburg. Lunenburg Polar Bears Season Update

Thanks to our Landowners!

The Polar Bears wrapped up another successful snowmobile season in April. Although the snow melted the second week of March, a strong February allowed the club to log over 1,400 miles of grooming. For the first time in three seasons the trails along the Connecticut River towards Gilman were simply awesome! The club also saw its seventh consecutive year of growth in membership and trail pass sales. The success draws winter enthusiasts to the Lunenburg-Gilman area. Thanks to our landowners and supporters that make Vermont snowmobiling such an amazing experience.

Beginning Wednesday, April 2nd, the Lunenburg Food Shelf will be open from 12 noon – 3pm on a weekly basis (every Wednesday).

The Food Shelf is located inside the Community Room at the Town Office Building, 9 West Main Street in Lunenburg. Entry to the Food Shelf is located on the South Lunenburg Road side-door entrance to the Town Office Building. Please note there are several stairs required to enter the Community Room. The Food Shelf is unattended, but if assistance is needed you can contact the Town Clerk’s Office at 802-892-5959.

The Food Shelf relies on donations of food and/or money to assure shelves are well stocked. If you’d like to donate, please visit the Town Clerk’s Office.

Dog License Extended Hours at The Town Clerk’s Office

The Town Clerk’s Office will be open extended hours from 5-6pm on Thursday, March 27th and Monday, March 31st for dog licensing.

If you haven’t had a chance to license your dog, this is a great time to do so. Licenses are due by April 1st. Please bring your rabies certificate. Fees are $11 for a spayed/neutered dog and $15 if not spayed/neutered.

Please Note: After April 1st, the fees increase to $13 for spayed/neutered and $19 for unspayed/unneutered dogs.

Lunenburg is in the process of drafting a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan for eligibility with federal disaster funding. Read more on the process and take the survey.

The town is drafting a Local Hazard Mitigation Plan. Once approved by FEMA, the plan is good for 5 years and the town is eligible for disaster related funding and cost savings.

Community input during the planning process and comment on the draft plan is encouraged.

New Town Clerk/Treasurer and Holiday Schedule

Town Clerk/Town Treasurer Update:

December 17th: The Select Board has chosen Gary Brigg to be the interim Town Clerk and Town Treasurer until the March 2025 Town Meeting. This appointment takes effect on Saturday, December 28th. Positions filled by the Board as a result of a vacancy are effective up until the next regularly scheduled meeting where an election occurs. Gary plans to run for a three-year term in March for both Town Clerk and Town Treasurer. Select Board members are not allowed to hold the office of Town Treasurer, so he will resign his Board seat, effective December 27, 2024. As part of this selection process, Gary recused himself from all parts of the appointment process.

Holiday Hours:

Holiday hours for the Town Clerk’s office, previously reported as closing at noon on 12/24 and reopening on January 2nd have been changed. The Town Clerk’s office will be open on Monday, December 30th and Tuesday, December 31st for regular office hours from 8am – noon and 1pm – 3pm both days.

Spread the word: The Riverside stone cleaning for this Saturday is being postponed.

In lieu of the possible effects from tropical storm Debbie and the travel concerns of the VOCA volunteers who travel a great distance to attend our Riverside stone cleaning days, we have opted to postpone the stone cleaning scheduled for Saturday, August 10th at Riverside Cemetery. We hope to schedule a stone cleaning day in September or October, depending on VOCA volunteer availability. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The Selectboard, Planning Committee and Community members will be hosting an Information Table at Old Home Day on Saturday, August 3rd from 10am-3pm.

There will be a composting information table where you can enter a free raffle to win a composter. We’ll have information on some great upcoming events including the Riverside Cemetery stone clean-up and repair day, and a special AARP Walk Audit to be held in September. Lots of other great information will be available. You’ll find us right next to the Polar Bears serving up their fantastic food! Come join us, celebrate our town and learn about all the exciting things happening in Lunenburg and Gilman.

Access site has been cleaned up!

In early July, the Planning Committee met to discuss a number of topics, including the need for removal of overgrown brush at the Mt. Orne Covered Bridge Kayak Access. Polar Bears President Mike Mutascio was at that meeting and followed up with information that these boat accesses were maintained by the Vermont River Conservancy. The Selectboard contacted VRC to see if this site could get some maintenance. Remy Crettol, Conservationist and Steward from VRC responded, noting that a group of VRC volunteers would be in the area the week of July 15th and would see what could be done. These pictures were taken on July 25th and show what an amazing job the VRC Volunteers did! A great example of how sharing resources can have successful outcomes. Lunenburg/Gilman To Seek Town Center Designation

LUNENBURG AND GILMAN EXPLORING VILLAGE CENTER DESIGNATION

Now that the Municipal Plan has been adopted, our next step in the process is to seek Village Center Designation for both Lunenburg and Gilman. Having this designation opens our communities up to a variety of benefits including tax credits, training and technical assistance, priority consideration for various state and regional grants; and eligibility for Better Places grants.

The first step in the process is to have representatives from the Agency visit both Lunenburg and Gilman to tour the Village centers and begin the process. That meeting has been scheduled for Friday, March 8th at 1pm. We'll start by meeting at the Select Board office in the Town Building in Lunenburg and then continue with a walk around of the area that will qualify for Village Center Designation. We expect this to take a couple hours.

We will then move to Gilman, meeting at the Senior Center, and begin our walk through from there. We should be wrapped up by 4 pm. Any members of the community are welcome to join this meeting.

We will not be making any decisions on the actual defined area of the Village Center at this meeting, but this site visit will help us define that area as we work through the application process.

Pictured is Tracy Davidson (right), Vice President of the Polar Bears, along with Jodi Wheeler of Project HOPE (Helping Other People Everyday). Jodi was the guest speaker at the club's October meeting... and helped us get ready for our first-ever TOYS FOR TOTS Giving Campaign!

To ensure this initiative benefits the local community, monetary and gift donations are directed towards local Organizations, including the Kingdom East School District. This focused approach increases the likelihood children receive what they need.

The club is also partnering with the Lunenburg Variety Store. A monetary drop-box and large gift box is on site at the store through the first week of December. Consider the following new and unwrapped gifts for the children:

*Gloves and mittens,

*Knit caps and winter socks,

*Crafts and activity books,

*Wrapping paper and related supplies, and

*New unwrapped toys.

The club will also be present at the Top of the Common Gingerbread Bazaaron December 2nd. The Polar Bears thank everyone for their support!

Polar Bears Prepare for the 2023-24 Season

The club began preparations for the upcoming winter. Signing and numerous trail improvement projects are already underway. This includes the use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding approved by the Select Board. Sections of Hagan Road and Old Pond Hill Road at Morrison Hill underwent some brush clearing, drainage enhancements, and packing stone to firm up the base and cover large rocks. This project increases the likelihood that the route is safer for other recreational activities like hiking, biking, ATV, and equestrian use. More upgrades are likely in the future.

An Update from the Lunenburg Select Board

Lunenburg Vermont's Municipal Plan Committee, Website News, Town-Owned Properties Committee, and MERP Committee

The Select Board wanted to provide some updates on the many exciting things happening right now in Lunenburg and Gilman! As many of your know, our Municipal Plan Steering Committee is well underway in their work. Thanks to Chairperson Tina Breault and Committee members James Ambruscotto, Cathy Scott and Brad Eaton for volunteering their time for this important work. I'm on the Committee as the Select Board Representative. But wait..that's not all!! Select Board member Harry Williams is guiding efforts for the redesign of our new Town website, working with Northeast Kingdom Online. Progress is well underway and we'll have a new website sooner rather than later. But wait...that's not all! Lister Linda Magoni is spearheading our committee that's researching Town-owned properties. This research can be exhausting because it requires deed verification and following an often limited trail of paperwork to confirm ownership. Thanks to Auditors Luke Robinson and Cathy Scott, Delinquent Tax Collector Rick Mullen and our Agent to Convey Real Estate Diane Peyton for being part of this Committee. But wait...there's more!! Lunenburg/Gilman was fortunate to receive a MERP energy assessment grant (thanks to Sharon Eaton for completing the application on behalf of our communities). This grant provides funds to have all Town-owned buildings assessed for energy efficiency and recommended energy upgrades. Phase 2 of this work could award up to $500,000 to complete those recommended upgrades. Thanks to Amanda Capps who is chairing our MERP Committee, and to Committee members Sharon Eaton, Deb Thomas and your Select Board representative, Alan Amadon for spearheading this effort. All of these Committees welcome your support and input. Committee meetings are always open to residents. We've only scratched the surface of the work to be done. But the work being done by these 4 groups is vital to our communities. Lunenburg and Gilman are on the move!
